Viognier

The variety is thought to have originated from the area along the Croatian coastline however it laid its roots firmly in the Rhone Valley of France and most people regard this as its homeland. Condrieu is the French appellation which made the variety famous and from here it has spread its tendrils across the globe.

Viognier is a relatively new white grape variety to Australia and has rapidly gained a strong following. Most wines produced are enticingly fruity and richly flavoured. Characterised by the stone fruit flavours and aromatics. Nowdays it has been know to be blending in small amounts to Shiraz or made simply as a still white wine. That said there are plenty of delicious and satisfying wines available.

Description:

Viognier has heady perfume of peaches and apricots, occasionally enhanced by a touch of spice and hint of blossom.

Can easily overpower many foods. (often high in alcohol and low in acidity)

Food to enjoy with:

Does extremely well paired with dishes containing crab and lobster. Has enough body to stand up to chicken or veal cooked with cream sauces. Perfect match for pork stuffed with apricots; or pair it with mild Indian currys or sweet-savoury flavours of Japanese.
